In Memoriam: Dr. Matthew Willson

It is with great sadness that we learned about the passing of Exeter graduate Dr. Matthew Willson, who became victim of a stray gunshot wound on January 16th, 2022, while visiting loved ones in Atlanta. Matt was a member of the Exeter astrophysics group between 2013 and 2017. His quick wit, kind, and gentle nature contributed to him being a much-loved member of our team. His exploits in defence for the department’s football team made him revered among our wider Physics family. As part of his PhD work he made important contributions in the search for planets around young stars and studying asymmetries in planet-forming discs. After graduating in summer 2017, Matt continued in research, working as a postdoc in Atlanta, USA and Liege, Belgium. Our sympathy goes out to his family, partner, and others grieved by this profound loss. He will be sadly missed by friends and colleagues at Exeter.
